Save the Brickworks
Loss of Green / Open Space
Whitehorse City Mayor Denise Massoud told The Age (16th of May 2024) that between the SRLP and the North East Link Works occuring in Burwood and Box Hill, the municipality was losing 15 MCG's worth of green / open space, which was devastating for liveability and biodiversity.
The draft Key Directions for Precinct Plans for Box Hill identify the Brickworks site for high-density development. This means the last green / open space of this size in Box Hill would be lost to development should this go ahead.
The former Standard Brickworks site is located in Federation Street Box Hill. The Brickworks are of historical and architectural importance for a number of reasons. The local community has been campaigning along with Whitehorse City Counsellor Blair Barker for the site to be used as green open space. The Brickworks is the only space large enough to cater for the expanding community and provide the many residents in high density housing an opportunity to experience an open green space near their home.

"The State Government thinks it (The Brickworks Site) should be developed for housing, I argue it MUST be provided as new park space."

Robert Jones
Box Hill Greenlinks President. May 2024
"There are so many reasons why parks and nature are important in a community. From an environmental point of view, it’s a habitat for animals but there are also a lot of psychological wellbeing benefits for human beings to have greenery around instead of being in a concrete jungle,"
